Cybersecurity Assessment

A few minutes and a handful of honest answers will tell you more about where your Vancouver Island business is exposed than most owners ever find out before something goes wrong. Work through the checklist, count your gaps, and see where you stand.

Know Where You Stand Before It Matters

This self-assessment is a way to find the weak points yourself, on your own schedule. Work through the questions below and give each one a straight answer. A “no” or a “not sure” counts as a gap worth noting, so keep a running total as you go. The scoring at the end explains what that total means and where to start.

Network and Perimeter Security

  • Do you have a business-grade firewall, or are you still running the router your internet provider handed you?
  • Is that firewall doing more than blocking obvious threats, such as filtering web traffic and inspecting what crosses the boundary?
  • Can you account for every device connected to your network right now?
  • Has the firewall setup been reviewed since the day it was first installed?

Email and Cloud Application Security

  • Do you have email protection beyond a basic spam filter, catching phishing and impersonation attempts?
  • If you use Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, are the security features configured for how you work, or left at their defaults?
  • Is multi-factor authentication, a second step beyond the password, turned on for every account?
  • Would anyone be alerted if an account started behaving oddly, such as emailing its whole contact list at once?

Endpoint and Device Security

  • Is endpoint protection, the security software on each computer and phone, installed and active on every device that touches company data?
  • Does that protection catch threats by their behaviour, or only by matching known viruses?
  • Are the personal phones and laptops that reach company email or files covered by any security policy?
  • Do you know whether a laptop stays protected once it leaves the office network?

User Security Awareness

  • Has your team had any security awareness training in the past year?
  • Would your staff recognise a convincing phishing email or a fake request to change payment details?
  • Is there a clear, known way for someone to report something that looks suspicious?
  • Do people know to verify an urgent money or data request before acting on it?

Data Protection and Backup

  • Are your important files backed up automatically, or does it depend on someone remembering?
  • Has a backup ever been tested by restoring from it, or is it only assumed to work?
  • Is at least one backup kept separate from your main network, out of reach of ransomware?
  • Do you know roughly how long it would take to get running again after a serious failure?

Access Control and Authentication

  • Does each person have their own login, or are passwords shared around?
  • Is multi-factor authentication also enforced specifically on remote access and administrator accounts?
  • Are former employees’ accounts shut off promptly when they leave?
  • Does each person’s access match their role, so they can only reach what they need?

What Your Score Means

Count the questions where you answered “no” or “not sure.” That total is a starting point rather than a verdict, but it tells you how soon to act.

0 to 3 Gaps

Your fundamentals are mostly in place. The priority now is keeping them there, reviewing the setup as the business changes and not letting a good configuration drift over time.

4 to 7 Gaps

There are some real gaps, though nothing that calls for panic. They’re worth closing over the next month or two, and email and endpoint security are usually the sensible place to begin.

8 to 11 Gaps

Meaningful exposure starts here. Several weak spots at once tend to compound, because a hole in one area often undoes the protection in another. This is the stage where working with someone to prioritise the fixes saves both money and guesswork.

12 or More Gaps

A score this high is worth moving on while it’s fresh. The encouraging part is that a business starting from here usually sees the biggest improvement from the first round of work, and the first step is finding out which weak spots matter most.

Want to know which of those weak spots put you most at risk? Westcom sorts the urgent from the minor for businesses across Vancouver Island.

Westcom builds your security on FortiGate firewalls and Sophos endpoint protection, the tools trusted to hold up under real business use. It is protection chosen to fit how your business runs, not a one-size box.

Talk to Westcom About Your Security

A self-check like this shows you where the gaps are. It can’t tell you which ones matter most for your business, or how they fit together, and that’s where a professional assessment picks up. Westcom reviews your real setup rather than a checklist, tests where you’re exposed, and hands back a plain-language picture of what to fix and in what order. It’s a look at where you stand, with no obligation to act on what it finds.

Westcom manages security across more than 1,000 endpoints for businesses in Victoria, Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley, and across Vancouver Island.
